ANZ Travel Visa Signature Credit Card review

Miles cards competition is heating up.New Visa Signature card from ANZ,the main attraction of this card is that it is the highest miles earning card for local spend for a non-Amex card. This is important because there are still many merchants that do not accept Amex. So, this is the best miles earning card for those who do not want an Amex, or as a backup to those using Amex.

(Note: I know you can earn 1.6 miles on DBS Altitude Visa on spend > $2k a month, which is higher than ANZ's 1.4. However, if you work the maths out, DBS Altitude Visa only earns more (in total) when you spend more than $4,000 in that month. (2,000 x 1.2 + 2,000 x 1.6 = 5,600 = 4,000 * 1.4))

PROS:

- 2,000 bonus air miles for the first S$500 you spend
- 2.8 air miles for every S$1 you spend overseas and 1.4 air miles for every S$1 you spend locally.
- 12,000 bonus air miles upon annual card renewal (Annual charges must be paid in cash and shouldn't be renewed with points)

-Complimentary Limousine access to changi, additional access with very $1500 spent

- Complimentary airport lounge access, again additional $1500 spent will give u additional access. You and your spouse or friends can enjoy complimentary and unlimited access to over a hundred Veloce VIP airport lounges around the world when you present your principal or supplementary ANZ Travel Visa Signature Credit Card. For lounges in Toronto, you will be required to print and complete an access coupon for entry.

- PP access worldwide
- Visa signature benefits and deals

Cons:

To my surprise, there are lot of caps on almost everything.

- 2.8 miles for overseas spend is only till Dec 31st 2012. Very unlikely they will continue this further.

- The maximum number of Travel$ which can be awarded under the Promotion will be limited to 14,000
Travel$ per Principal Cardmember per calendar month (This sucks big time and total a turn-off for me)

- The Priority Pass membership card must be presented at the Priority Pass lounges for entry, and will be limited to 2 complimentary visits per calendar year. $27 per visit for any further usage

- SATS lounge access is only till 31 dec 2013.
- 2 complimentary visits only
- Thereafter Cardmember must charge a minimum of S$1,500 on any
retail transactions to his/her ANZ Travel Visa Signature Credit Card in
the last 30 days prior to the day of visit to enjoy the complimentary
access or else pay $35 each visit
- Guests of Cardmember will be charged at the prevailing lounge rate.

-Eligibility for Airport Limousine Transfer is subject to a minimum charge
of $1,500 on any retail transactions in the last 30 days prior to
redemption date. Surcharges not included- This could be ERP, late night, city surcharges etc. Only 1 redemption per month regardless of your spend

- Each conversion of Travel$ to Miles is subject to a S$25 conversion fee

  1. Sales person told me that the 2,000 miles for new to bank customers only. When I asked about the form, she showed it to me. It was basically a declaration form that I do not currently hold an ANZ card.

BUT, the same sales person also told me that the 2.8 miles /$ for overseas spend was also for new customers only. When I said that this was not in the T&Cs that were posted online, she was adamant that she was right. So, I walked off and spoke to another sales person. This guy then said that the 2.8 miles was for all card holders... :p But, the 2,000 miles was only for applicants who do not have an ANZ card.

Anyway, lesson learnt... Next time, straightaway cancel the card when it becomes useless. Offer fee waiver also cancel! :p

  2. Have a few questions, wondering any kind souls can enlighten:

    1. Based on the SIA KF chart shared by someone earlier, am i right to say that its based on per pax per trip? So meaning if i want to redeem a round trip for 2 pax, i need to x4 to the numbers in that chart?

    2. What are the difference betweem saver award and standard award?

    3. Does SIA KF allow partial redemption of KF miles (ie partial redemption + cash topup)?

    4. I cant seem to locate the list of FFP that ANZ allows the conversion of their miles to, does anyone know? Just want to be sure that the miles I have at UOB can be merged with that in ANZ to KF.

    Thanks in advance.

  3. 1. Yes, you are right, if you are redeeming for 2 persons, you will have to multiply by 4 as the miles shown is for one-way travel only

    2. Generally, for roundtrip ticket, for saver award, ticket is valid for 6 months from date of departure. For standard award, it is 12 months. In addition, for saver award, you can perform one stop-over while for standard award ticket, you can do 2 stopover.

E.g. If you are flying from Singapore to New York via Frankfurt, you can do a stopover at Frankfurt once if you are using saver ticket. For standard award, you can stopover twice -> Once while flying there and once on the way back. In addition, there are generally more seats allocated for standard award compared to saver award. You can refer to the website:
    More about redeeming miles

    3. Yes, SQ allows that so long as you have 50% miles available at point of redemption. Additional miles can be bought at blocks of 1,000 miles @ US$40. More information available here at the earlier website as well.

    4. ANZ Singapore only allows transfer to SIA KrisFlyer Program and Cathay Pacific's Asiamiles Program.

  4. The 2.8 miles for overseas travel is a launch bonus, and I take it as such. Other cards have had such promos as well. Sure, I do not expect it to continue but again, it's nothing new. Just make the best of it while it is there.

The PP card offered is exactly the same as what's offered for CitiPremiermiles, and DBS Altitude. So, can't really fault them for that. In fact, I'll say ANZ has done better by also including the SATS lounge vouchers as well as complimentary access when you meet the minimum spending requirement. (If you have ever been to the SATS lounge and the PP lounges in Changi, you'll agree that the SATS lounge is much better.)

I had the ANZ Platinum card which used to have the same limosine service. I recall that you didn't need to pay ERP. The only surcharge was the midnight surcharge for bookings between 12 and 6am, if I recall correctly. This is a rather common condition for cards offering the limosine service (eg UOB PRVI Miles, HSBC VI).

Finally, yes, there is a conversion fee, which is also a common practise. As far as I know, Maybank is the only one NOT to have a fee. While one can argue that you should then just stick with Horizon, but consider that for local purchases, you are effectively losing out on 1 miles per $ (Maybank Horizon earns 0.4 miles /$ for local transactions). I think the $25 is a small price to pay.

  5. just called ANZ, confirmed this.
From 1st April, no more bonus miles for overseas spending, for those of us got the card earlier.

So overseas cards to use now:

    Citi Prestige (2m/$1 plus bonus)
HSBC VI (2-2.5m/$1 depending on previous year spending)
UOB Prvi Miles (2.5m/$1, with higher foreign exchange fees and poor round downs though).

HSBC VI looks best if you can hit 75k/year spending. With other benefits such as free limo and jet quay etc.

  6. anyone has experienced with this cash rebate benefit?

    1. when they mean minimum spend, is it 300 per month for all 3 months in the quarter, or only the months you are getting the rebate?

    2. the rebates are calculated in months and quarters. Are they calender months and calender quarters, or statement months and statement quarters?

    3. when are the cash rebate posted?

    4. is the benefit valid for ezlink top and tap?

  7. My monthly SingTel bill is ard $200, usually paid via DBS Women's card for 10x pts (ie. 4 miles/$).

I use ANZ Travel Visa Card whenever I can't get better miles from other Cards.

When I wanna book limousine to Airport, I would add in expenses like SingTel bills, SP Services... etc into ANZ Travel card to meet that minimum $1,500 spend.

  8. ANZ's fees for foreign transactions are higher than other banks. And many if not most retailers in australia charge an additional fee on top for cc payments. Thus your 5% would barely cover the charges.

Please note that the redemption rate you quoted is a promotional one for the X'mas promo and may be withdrawn after end Feb when the bonus Travel$ come in to the acct. At other times, the redemption rate is not so generous.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Stop spreading wrong information on higher foreign currency fees for ANZ card. They charge the same 2.5% like most other banks. Its the cross border charge that you should be wary of, they charge 2.5% instead of 0.8%. Use for foreign currency, no issue. Use for DCC, no way.

    ReplyDelete
  10. So cross border charge is only when foreign transaction is billed in SGD instead of foreign currencies?

Just curious as I was charged a cross border charge on the Imagine card for a transaction that was done in a FCY (no DCC).

  11. I have redeemed $500 using 27500miles, it show up immediately on the next statement, quite efficient. Now is a good chance for those want to cash out their miles at 1.8c per mile.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Purchased 3 tickets in Thai airways website on Nov with ANZ travel visa. When received bil nowl then noticed different charges for these 2 transactions.

called them then was told there are cross board charges so there're 2.5% extra charged although the confirmation mail received from thai airways is in SGD. In the end, they waived 50% of the 2.5% charges.

Question, if use uob visa signature for this transaction, will be earn 10x UN$?

For safe, next time better use other site to book thai airways tickets to avoid ertra charges.

    ReplyDelete
  13. If using UOB visa signature, will not earn 10x UNI$ if charged in SGD. Unless there is option in thai airways website to charge in THB, then will earn 10x UNI$.

Suggest you use DBS Woman's card if your tix do not exceed SGD2000 in value. Will get 10x UNI$ for it.

  14. Understand that if I buy air tickets using my travel visa card, I'll be covered by the card's travel insurance. But what if I'm also buying for my gf (not wife yet, lol..), will she be covered by the same travel insurance?

And, what if I supp the card to her, but pay for both air tickets using my card?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Thus I recommend you to buy proper travel insurance for her (even if you don't want to buy for yourself). In case she falls sick during the trip or has an accident. The insurance coverage tagged with cc is usually for loss of life and not much else. You don't want to land in trouble if something happens to her...spoil your holiday. Somebody I heard about...went with his gf on ski holiday not so long ago. She was a beginner, injured her knee early in the holiday..ended up in hosp overseas. He spent most of his holiday visiting her in hosp.

  17. I have claimed from AIG for the whole family when we were delayed in Geneva for 2 days due to bad weather (snow). Claimed $500 for each family member. Total $2500. It covered the hotel and food for the delay with some $$ left over. I buy an annual family policy that covers higher risk sports such as skiing. It's more cost effective for me that way.

  18. I bought ace travel insurance from scb. Cheaper but for basic coverage. Annual plan for whole family 2d1c ar $240.

  20. ANZ has updated the website for Travel Card.
No more access to SATS Lounge, but seems like the Veloce lounge access is now UNLIMITED, minimum spending of $1500 not required anymore. T&C is here (funny that the title is 24 May 2005)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Some lounges are same with PP.
And in singapore changi airport, I actually prefer Skyview over SATS Premier.

Btw, it also looks like no more complimentary PP. I guess after the current membership expires, no new card will be delivered anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yes. Depending on your travel pattern, this could be an improvement or reduction.

The previous system was limited in visits but as part of the Priority Pass network, this gave you many options, esp in North America and Europe. If you spend enough on the card, accessing the SATS Lounge in Singapore isn't hard either.

The new system on the other hand is good if you travel frequently, but it's network of lounges now is very limited. The list looks long but a lot are labelled 'coming soon' (such as Changi T2, all cities in China, New York, etc). With the exception of the 'coming soon' in New York, it has no lounges anywhere else in the United States.

For my case, I don't like it. While I rarely use PP as I can get lounge access due to airline status, it is something useful to have when flying budget airline. Granted, I have plenty of access from other cards, having 2 more from ANZ was useful. The SATS Lounge access is also useful in T2, as I find the Krisflyer Gold Lounge to be claustrophobic. Looking at the list from Veloce, the only lounge I can see myself using would be the Plaza Premium Lounge in KL, but only so I don't need to use up one of the visits on my other Priority Pass cards.

    ReplyDelete
  23. typically, if its due to airline fault, will be quite easy the moment they issue those letter. it will be required for most if not all travel insurance. Other documents would be boarding pass? You should download a copy of the TnC in your handphone and check the requirements the moment u have some potential claims. E.g. theft has to be reported to the relevant authority within 24hrs. Anyway, I buy travel insurance mostly during the Natas travel period, where there is 40%-45% discount (I prefer buying from Tenet insurance). NV claim from Ace before (bought 1 or 2 times). Tenet claimed 2 times - quite easy as long as u have those supporting documents. within 1-2 weeks money disbursed.

    ReplyDelete
  24. My wife case was previous fight delayed so that missed connection flight to sg, need stay overnight in hk.

Dragon air staff issued the letter stated delay due to air control, rest part leave it blank for us to fill up. I filled the detailed flight time on my own. Together with all BP copy to ace for claim.
2-3 wks received mail then cheque. Quite hassle free process.

However, online promotion entitles you to 2,760 Travel$ to redeem $50 cash credit when you spend $700 at retail shop.

  27. i'm currently at KLIA and was not able to get free access to the plaza premium lounge. Apparently my ANZ Travel Card is not on the list of eligible cards. Any ideas?

  28. Was calling in for a taxi voucher yesterday and the agent I spoke with on the phone said it was also available to be used, both to or FROM Changi airport. Haven't tried calling the taxi company yet, but if so, its a nice way to avoid the $3-5 airport surcharge!

  29. Received my miles for annual fee renewal. Only managed to check recently as I was overseas. But I did received an SMS informing me they were trying to call me to inform that the 12k miles have been credited (yeah, I had a few missed calls on my mobile when I was overseas)

But the process of getting the miles took quite a while, almost 4 months from my annual fee payment date. I had lengthy calls to 2 ANZ agents on separate occasions, both insisted initially I was not entitled. But I read out to them the T&Cs and they finally agreed with me.

Another way is to drop an email via the ANZ website. They did respond to me quite promptly.

You should be entitled to the 12k miles assuming the terms of renewal have been fulfilled. Good luck!
